Which counties publish precinct maps?

County by county: which publish their voting precinct map as data, which post only a PDF, and which publish none we could find.

The law asks every Illinois election authority to send the State Board of Elections a PDF of its precinct map and to post it on its website. A PDF is made for people to look at: a computer cannot tell from it which side of a line an address falls on. This page lists, county by county, whether each of Illinois's 102 counties publishes its precinct map as data, only as a picture, or not at all, as we found it on its own website.

What we found

Of Illinois's 102 counties, as checked on 10 October 2026:

  • 44 counties publish it as data: an online map service or a download that mapping software can read.
  • 2 counties show it only on an online map a person can look at, with no way to read the lines as data.
  • 24 counties post it only as a PDF or picture, which a person can read but a computer cannot.
  • 22 counties have no precinct map that we could find on the county's own website, its map pages, or the documents they link to.
  • 10 counties have a website or online map we could not read, because it refused automated readers, put up a challenge or a terms page, or did not answer; we did not try to get around any of them.
  • 4 counties that do not publish their precinct map as data sent us a digital copy by e-mail when we asked.

Chicago runs its own elections, and the City of Chicago publishes its ward precincts as data. Cook County's row below is the suburban county around it.

Why the form matters

To tell someone which precinct their address is in, a lookup like this one needs the precinct lines as data. Where a county posts only a PDF, somebody has to trace every line by hand, and trace it again each time the county changes its precincts.

Where a county publishes no map this site can use, it falls back on the precinct map the 2020 Census collected, which is already wrong wherever a county has merged or redrawn precincts since.

Wisconsin and Minnesota each publish one statewide precinct map. In Illinois, each county publishes its own, or doesn't.

How we checked

For each county we read its own website: the county clerk's election pages, the county's GIS or map pages, and the documents those pages link to, opening any PDF that looked like a map. Where this site already reads a county's precinct map live, we read that map again the same day. We followed each website's robots.txt, and where a site refused automated readers, put up a challenge or a terms page, or did not answer, we stopped and marked the county could not check.

This is a snapshot, not a live check: each row describes what we found on 10 October 2026. A county may publish a map we missed, or may have published one since. If yours does, tell us and we will correct its row.

The law in question is section 11-6 of the Illinois Election Code (10 ILCS 5/11-6). Since 2014 it has asked each election authority to send the State Board a PDF map of its current precincts and to post it on any website it maintains, with a new map at least 90 days before the next election whenever its precincts change. It does not ask for the map as data. We did not check whether the State Board posts the maps it receives: its website asks automated readers to stay away, and we respect that.

Not for legal or official use. Boundary and roster data come from public sources that explicitly disclaim legal precision. Confirm district assignments and officeholders with the relevant government office before relying on them for anything official.
