What the lookup shows

A judicial district is not a subcircuit

A judicial district elects the justices of the two courts above the trial court. A judicial subcircuit is a smaller shape inside one county that elects a CIRCUIT judge — who then sits across the whole circuit, which is why no judge belongs to a subcircuit once elected. The two answer different questions and this map draws both.

Where the names come from

The Illinois courts' own published rosters, re-read on a schedule and landing as a reviewed pull request. The Supreme Court publishes which of its justices is Chief Justice, and that is carried; the Appellate Court publishes no such role and none is supplied.
