Kentucky sources & data layers

Every layer in districtry Kentucky, and exactly where its data comes from.

This app is a reader over other people's data. It draws no boundary of its own and names no officeholder it cannot cite, so the useful question about any answer it gives is who published this, and when. That is what this page is for: the publishers the app credits as a whole, then one row per layer naming the source behind that layer specifically.

Not for legal or official use. Boundary and roster data come from public sources that explicitly disclaim legal precision. Always confirm district assignments and officeholders with the relevant government office before relying on them for anything official.

Data last verified: October 11, 2026

Where a source publishes nothing, the app says so rather than guessing — the missing-data panel on the map is the standing list of what nobody publishes yet, and what would close each gap.

This page says where each answer comes from today, layer by layer: the publisher its boundary is drawn from, where the names on its card come from, and the ground it answers on.

Who publishes the data

The upstream publishers this app depends on, across all layers. Per-layer provenance is in the matrix below.

The layer matrix

16 layers — 8 political and legislative, 4 schools, 4 geography and amenities. Each row names the publisher the boundary comes from, where the names on the card come from, and the ground the layer actually answers on — outside that ground the layer hides itself rather than guessing.

Political & legislative 8 layers

Districts that elect somebody — from your ward to your seat in Congress.

LayerWhat it answersBoundary sourceWho it namesWhere it applies
U.S. Houseus-house The U.S. House district covering the point, and the representative holding it. congress-roster.json, rebuilt weekly by CI from the public-domain unitedstates/congress-legislators dataset — including each member's district office and Washington office. Kentucky — statewide.
Supreme Court districtky-supreme-court The Supreme Court district covering the point. One justice is elected from each. The seven justices, one per district, from the Supreme Court's own page at kycourts.gov, which prints the district each was elected from. Refreshed weekly. Kentucky — statewide.
Court of Appeals districtky-court-of-appeals The Court of Appeals district covering the point. Two judges are elected from each. All fourteen judges, two per district, from the Court of Appeals' own page at kycourts.gov, which prints the district and division each was elected to. Refreshed weekly. Kentucky — statewide.
Kentucky Senate Districtky-senate The Kentucky Senate district covering the point. Not yet shipped. The card names the district and links the Kentucky Senate's own member directory; nobody is named rather than guessed. Recorded as the coverage gap ky-legislature-roster. Kentucky — statewide.
Circuit Courtky-circuit-court The judicial circuit covering the point. Kentucky's trial court of general jurisdiction. The circuit and family-court judges of each circuit, from the Court of Justice's own county pages, which print the judicial circuit each was elected from. Family Court is a division of Circuit Court under Ky. Const. 112(6) and its judges are elected from the circuit, so they appear here. Jefferson's 30th circuit is read from the Jefferson Circuit Court's and Jefferson Family Court's own websites, because its county page lists no judges and links those two sites instead. Kentucky — statewide.
District Courtky-district-court The judicial district covering the point. Kentucky's limited-jurisdiction trial court. The district judges of each district, from the Court of Justice's own county pages, which print the judicial district each was elected from. Jefferson's 30th district is read from the Jefferson District Court's own website, because its county page lists no judges and links that site instead. Kentucky — statewide.
Kentucky House Districtky-house The Kentucky House district covering the point. Not yet shipped — same as the Senate above; the card links the Kentucky House's own member directory. Recorded as the coverage gap ky-legislature-roster. Kentucky — statewide.
Magistrate or Council Districtfiscal-court Which magisterial district (or, in Louisville and Lexington, which council district) contains the point, and who represents it on the fiscal court or council. The magistrate or council member for the district, from the same county roster the County card reads (ky-county-officials.json, from the Kentucky Department for Local Government's directory). A magistrate's district comes from the 2022 general election results; a council member's from the government's own council map. A member the results could not match is not named on the district, and the card says so. 56 of the 104 counties whose magistrates are elected by district, plus Louisville Metro and Lexington-Fayette. The other 48 are not drawn yet because the published results did not place every one of their precincts; the 14 commissioner counties elect by the whole county and have no districts to draw.

Schools 4 layers

The district, the attendance zone, and the schools nearest the point.

LayerWhat it answersBoundary sourceWho it namesWhere it applies
School District (Unified)school-district-unified The unified (every-grade) school district covering the point. NO OFFICEHOLDER. Kentucky elects every county school board by division and every independent school board at large (KRS 160.210(1)), and this app has built neither roster, so the card names the district and links the Kentucky Department of Education. Recorded as the coverage gap ky-school-board-members. Kentucky — statewide, except the four areas the Census places in its elementary and secondary tilings.
School Board Divisionschool-board-district The division of a Kentucky county board of education that contains the point, in the counties whose divisions this map draws (Jefferson and Rowan), and, in Jefferson County, the three precincts the statute leaves for the county board of elections to place. NO OFFICEHOLDER NAMED. No list of a county board's members by division has been read for this app, so the card names the division, says how it was drawn and links the board's own page. Recorded as the coverage gap ky-school-board-members. Jefferson County, inside the Jefferson County School District (the Anchorage Independent School District, whose board is elected at large, is in no division), and Rowan County. Elsewhere the card says the county's divisions are not drawn here yet.
School District (Elementary)school-district-elementary The elementary-only school district covering the point, in the four places Kentucky has one. NO OFFICEHOLDER. Kentucky elects every county school board by division and every independent school board at large (KRS 160.210(1)), and this app has built neither roster, so the card names the district and links the Kentucky Department of Education. Recorded as the coverage gap ky-school-board-members. Kentucky — four areas only, totalling 39.0 km2.
School District (Secondary)school-district-secondary The school district that runs the high school for the point, in the four places Kentucky separates it from the elementary district. NO OFFICEHOLDER. Kentucky elects every county school board by division and every independent school board at large (KRS 160.210(1)), and this app has built neither roster, so the card names the district and links the Kentucky Department of Education. Recorded as the coverage gap ky-school-board-members. Kentucky — the same four areas as the elementary tiling, 39.0 km2.

Geography & amenities 4 layers

The boundaries that place an address without electing anyone, plus the nearest public services.

LayerWhat it answersBoundary sourceWho it namesWhere it applies
Countycounty Which county contains the point, who sits on its governing body, who holds its elected county offices, and who sits on the board of its conservation district. Every county's governing body and elected officers, from the Kentucky Department for Local Government's county directory (kydlgweb.ky.gov/Counties/), one page per county; built by ky/scripts/build_ky_county_officials.py and refreshed weekly by update-ky-county-officials.yml. In 118 counties that is the fiscal court — the judge/executive and the magistrates or three commissioners; Jefferson and Fayette are merged governments, so their cards name the Louisville Metro Council and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council from the same directory's city entries. The officers are the county attorney, clerk, sheriff, jailer, coroner and property valuation administrator. The directory does not say which district a magistrate holds; the district beside a name comes from the 2022 general election results, and the Magistrate or Council District layer says which district a point is in. The card also names the seven supervisors of the county's conservation district (two districts in Logan County), from the Division of Conservation's sheet for each district, read by ky/scripts/build_ky_conservation_boards.py: each supervisor's name and the year the term ends, which is all the sheets give; re-read quarterly and in January after the November election (ky/WATCH.md). Kentucky — statewide.
Census County Divisioncounty-subdivision The census county division containing the point, and its county. NO OFFICEHOLDER. A census county division is an area the Census Bureau draws to report its counts: no one is elected from it, and Kentucky has no townships, so the county governs everyone outside a city. The card names the division and its county and says it governs nobody. Kentucky — statewide.
Voting Precinctvoting-precinct The voting precinct containing the point — where a reader votes and how their ballots are reported. NO OFFICEHOLDER, and none is missing. A precinct elects nobody — it is an election-administration unit, not a district with a representative — so the card says that rather than leaving a reader to wonder which name is absent. Kentucky — statewide.
Citymunicipality The city covering the point, if any. Kentucky has no township tier, so a point outside every city is governed by its county and the card is correctly empty. The mayor and the city council or commission of each city, from the Kentucky Department for Local Government's municipal directory (kydlgweb.ky.gov/Cities/), read county by county and joined to the Census place id by name and checked against the county the directory names; built by ky/scripts/build_ky_city_officials.py and refreshed weekly by update-ky-city-officials.yml. Staff the directory lists beside them (clerk, attorney, chiefs) are left out. The directory dates nothing, so the card prints the day it was read. Kentucky — statewide, answering only inside an incorporated city.
