Who runs my county or city?

Virginia boards of supervisors and city councils — all 95 counties and 38 independent cities, free, by address, ZIP, or a tap on the map.

Every Virginia county is governed by a board of supervisors, and every independent city by its city council. Virginia's 38 independent cities belong to no county, so a city's council governs it as a county's board governs a county. Most boards and councils are elected from districts, some at large, and a few counties also elect a chair at large; Arlington County's board is called the County Board. The lookup finds your county or city and lists who sits on its board or council.

What the lookup shows

Select any point in Virginia and the County or City card names the county or city, the members of its board or council elected at large, its elected chair or mayor, and its school board's at-large members.

Where the board or council is elected by district, the Supervisor or Council District card names the member for the point you picked, and the School Board District card names its school board member. Every one of those districts is on the map.

Where the names come from

Every name is the winner of an election in the Virginia Department of Elections' results of each local contest, read every week, with the date of the election beside it. A result names who won, not who sits now, so a member appointed to fill a vacancy is not named until an election fills the seat, and your county's or city's own website is the current word.

Where the results do not settle who holds a seat (a special election that does not say which seat it filled, or a change in the number of seats on the ballot), the seat names no one and says why. A few such seats are named instead from the county's or city's own website, and say so.

Where the boundaries come from

The county and city lines come from the U.S. Census Bureau. The supervisor and council districts are drawn from the Department of Elections' precincts, every one of which lies wholly inside one district, so each district's lines are its precincts' lines. Every source is on the sources & data layers page.

Not for legal or official use. Boundary and officeholder data come from public sources that explicitly disclaim legal precision. Confirm officeholders with your county or city before relying on them for anything official.

Every county and city government

Every Virginia county or city whose roster this project has: 127 counties and cities, 762 people, each name the winner of an election in the Virginia Department of Elections' results, or read from the county's or city's own website where those results do not settle a seat.
